Drowned toddler is the latest horror in migrant crisis

Must read

The body of a drowned Syrian toddler washed up on the beach in Bodrum in Turkey has sparked outrage.

Pictures from the scene show a boy wearing a red t-shirt and shorts lying face-down on a beach near the resort town.

The boy has been identified as three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, whose five-year-old brother died on the same boat carrying Syrian refugees.

Meanwhile, last night hundreds of people took part in a standoff with police outside a station in Budapest , many say they have tickets and are insisting they be allowed to travel on to Germany.

Italy, France and Germany have now called for “fair distribution” of refugees throughout the EU, however Jane Anne McKenna from Medecins San Frontieres says that this may not be enough: “This agreement is a positive development but a huge amount still needs to be done.

“It is Ireland, but it is also all EU member states, that have a responsibility and a duty to act when people essentially are dying on our doorstep.

“We need to look at how we can fairly attribute them to every country in the EU and I do believe that Ireland should do more in this regard.”
