Amber Heard came out at the GLAAD 25th anniversary party, walking the red carpet with her partner Tasya van Ree for the first time.
The 24-year-old actress – who has appeared in Zombieland and Pineapple Express and will play Johnny Depp’s love interest in The Rum Diary next year – made her first public appearance with her photographer and artist girlfriend of two years at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation party.
Amber told AfterEllen.com: “I think GLAAD is one of the many reasons that I, as a 24-year-old, can come out.”
She went on: “I hate the idea of a label just as much as anyone else but I’m with who I’m with, I love who I love and I’m if not a better actress than I was yesterday and my personal life should have no effect on that.”
Cher’s son Chaz Bono and Samantha Who star Jean Smart were also among the celebrity attendees who toasted the group, which focuses on how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are presented in the media.
Richard Jennings, a former president of GLAAD who received the first-ever Founders’ Award at the event, praised hit TV show Glee for offering young people positive representations of gay people.
He said: “The steady stream of negative portrayals and censorship of gay and lesbian lives on film and in television has given way to much more realistic and life-affirming depictions, such as this year’s The Kids Are All Right and TV’s Glee.”
