The Duchess of Cornwall laughed off an attack on her car by tuition fee protesters

The Duchess of Cornwall has laughed off an attack on her car by tuition fee protesters.

Camilla said she was “fine” after the car she and the Prince of Wales were travelling in had a window broken and was covered in paint.

Their Rolls-Royce was targeted as they attended the Royal Variety Performance in London’s West End.

After the performance members of the Royal Family usually meet the entertainers backstage to thank them for their efforts but Charles and Camilla left minutes after Take That closed the show.

When asked how she was as she left the London Palladium, the Duchess said: “I’m fine thanks – first time for everything.”

Charles, who was following behind, smiled as they left the theatre’s foyer to get into a police van which took them away.

On the streets they were flanked by their protection officers and uniformed police as they stepped into the back of the large vehicle.

The very unusual step of transporting members of the Royal Family in a marked police car to elude potential attackers will raise questions in the coming days.

But when a Clarence House spokeswoman with the royal couple was asked if the incident would lead to a security review, she replied: “We don’t comment on security.”
