Riley: Riseborough was 'fantastic'

Must read

Sam Riley has been singing the praises of co-star Andrea Riseborough

Sam Riley has said his Brighton Rock co-star Andrea Riseborough was “great to be horrible to”.

In the film the actor stars as Pinkie, a young mobster who cruelly manipulates his innocent girlfriend Rose, played by Andrea.

“She’s a fantastic actress. You’re only as good as the people you work with, they raise the game and she was great to be horrible to. I enjoyed it,” Sam said at the movie’s premiere in London.

Adapted from Graham Greene’s 1930s novel and updated to 1964, Brighton Rock follows Pinkie as he makes his way through the ranks of the town’s gang scene.

Sam, 31, first encountered the book in his early teens.

“I was about 13 so I don’t actually think I read it all the way through, it started going over my head. But it stuck with me, it’s such a weird name for a baddie and I remember thinking it was creepy,” he said.

When asked if Pinkie had any redeeming qualities, Sam didn’t seem so sure what they were.

“Yeah. I can’t really think of any off the top of my head, but I’m sure there are some,” he added.

“He’s so mixed up and complex and villainous, I’d never really played anything like that.”

:: Brighton Rock is in UK cinemas from Friday.
