Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has told Prime Minister David Cameron to “stop saying” he is a fan of the band.
Mr Cameron has spoken several times of his love of the Mancunian indie rockers and picked their track, This Charming Man, when he appeared on Desert Island Discs.
Marr, whose jangly guitar style was central to the band’s distinctive sound, tweeted: “David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don’t. I forbid you to like it.”
The band, famously fronted by controversial singer Morrissey, enjoyed cult status in the 1980s before they split up in 1987.
It is not the first time band members have fallen out with Conservative politicians.
Morrissey’s debut album, 1988’s Viva Hate, included the song Margaret On The Guillotine which imagined the execution of Mrs Thatcher.
