Suicide Squad likely won’t land in China

Must read

Suicide Squad is in cinemas now and estimates are suggesting its in for a record breaking opening weekend.

That’s good news for everyone involved, especially when you consider the film has a price tag of close to 200 million dollars and that it recently underwent expensive reshoots.

Factor in the cost of a massive global marketing campaign and the relatively low return on Batman v Superman earlier in the year and Suicide Squad needs to be a huge international hit.

There’s a good chance of solid numbers in the US and the West but it’s seeming less and less likely that the film will manage to earn a place at cinemas in China. There’s no confirmed release date there yet, and normally a major film like this would be confirmed by now.

The rumour is that there isn’t a lot of demand for the film locally, and as China only lets in a certain number of Western films every year it’s likely not to make the cut. Considering how huge the film market is there, the second highest in the world after the States, that could severely limit the films earning potential internationally.
