Volkswagen admits underestimating CO2 emissions in 800,000 cars

Volkswagen has found a new issue around what it calls “unexplained inconsistencies” in carbon dioxide emissions from 800,000 vehicles.

The latest revelation, where the car maker’s admits carbon dioxide emissions were underestimated on 800,000 of its cars, could impact on motor tax levels by putting vehicles into a different tax band.

The car maker has not revealed the models involved.

The issue mostly affects diesel models, but for the first time some petrol vehicles are also included.

The German car giant is still reeling from the scandal of cheating US tests for nitrogen oxide.

It is estimated the latest problem will cost it around €2bn.
