2011: The Year of the Tablet – The Samsung Galaxy Tab, Apple iPad, and the Upcoming iPad 2

Tablets are the hottest new computing trend that has taken the corporate world by storm at the same time as infiltrating indie rock communities with a simple and comprehensive charm. The initial entry into the tablet market and the current industry king is the Apple iPad; however, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has also shown some recent strength and is now cresting over two million sales worldwide.
Whether you’re an on-the-move executive who might like to have a tablet for networking purposes as well as to present business reports or a student looking for a portable solution to all of your social networking and educational needs, tablet computers are already rocking the corporate world as well as the casual.
Bigger Necessarily Better When it comes to Tablet Computers?
The iPad is easily much larger than the Galaxy Tab, clocking in with a nearly 10” display, with a resolution of 768 x 1024 to the 7” offered by the Galaxy Tab with a resolution of 620 x 1024. In terms of visuals, the iPad screen has a beautiful glassy look that emphasizes the sleek, glossy look of the design. However, text and e-books will display in crisper detail on the Galaxy Tab due to a higher degree of pixel density.
In more practical, everyday terms – both tablets are meant to be highly portable, though once again the edge has to be offered to the Galaxy Tab for adopting the successful approach that has worked for the netbook. Smaller alternatives to existing technologies that do not sacrifice style or functionality have proven enormously successful amongst consumers and the trend is expected to continue.
Which Operating System (OS) is better or Easier to Use? Google Android vs. Apple iOS
The debate amongst the computing community rages on with regards to which operating system should be considered superior, Google’s Android as installed on the Galaxy Tab, or the proprietary Apple iOS software which comes preloaded on the iPad. Approaching the issue objectively, each operating system has their own strengths and weaknesses.
For those who prefer a simple, unencumbered approach to computing the Apple iPad is likely a superior choice. The larger display, intuitive design (a mainstay of Apple’s corporate image) and lack of compatibility issues mean less frustration and confusion for users. The Apple Store holds an enormous volume of content that should suit nearly everyone’s needs.
That’s not to say that Android is an archaic or overly confusing operating system – it’s not – but the Galaxy Tabs strength lies elsewhere. The simple fact that Android is what is known as an “open” operating system, meaning that the list of third-party applications (apps) and games from independent developers is near endless. The open source movement is gaining a great deal of steam and open operating systems such as Google’s Android are threatening traditional business models with new distribution models and technological innovation.
What about the iPad 2?
While Samsung’s device has begun to really get rolling in the tablet market, there has been widespread speculation that Apple will be releasing an iPad 2 sometime in early April. Speculation at this point has focused on a few key changes and additions. A larger speaker will be included to enhance volume and sound clarity. The iPad 2 will also be thinner than the original model and will feature a high resolution screen – nearly doubling the amount of pixels present. Additionally, there is talk surrounding the inclusion of new data ports to enhance connectivity as well as multiple storage options. This release likely means good things coming down the pipe for those tentative buyers looking to snag a deal, as the original version of the iPad will likely be sold at a substantial discount pending the release of the iPad 2.
