		</div><p>A 20ft (6m) sinkhole has opened up in a residential street.</p>
<p>The gaping hole, in Craster Square in the Coxlodge area of Newcastle upon Tyne, appeared next to a row of garages and spans the width of the road.</p>
<p>As a result, a car was left stranded on a driveway.</p>
<p>The sinkhole has revealed old mine workings in an area which used to have a number of pits.</p>
<p>A man who lives a few doors away said: “The police knocked on my door about 11.30am and he said, ‘Don’t go out the back – there’s a big sinkhole appeared’.</p>
<p>“I thought at first, ‘That’s my garage gone’, but it’s a bit further along from me.</p>
<p>“There was a lady who was getting her car out the garage and the hole went and so she phoned the police straight away.</p>
<p>“It’s the main pit shaft – it’s all pit workings round here. It’s really shocking to have it happen.”</p>
<p>A Newcastle City Council spokesman said: “We are aware that a 20-30ft hole has appeared near Craster Square in Coxlodge, Gosforth.</p>
<p>“We understand that this is an old shaft connected to former mine workings that belong to the National Coal Board (NCB).</p>
<p>“Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service are both in attendance, as well as the council’s technical and structural engineering teams who are providing assistance to emergency services.</p>
<p>“NCB have been contacted and their emergency response team is attending the scene. We will provide further updates as they become available.”</p>
