<p>The head of the Army has paid a pre-Christmas visit to British troops serving in Afghanistan&#8217;s Helmand province.</p>
<p>Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Peter Wall, met senior officers and soldiers on his trip.</p>
<p>He visited the headquarters of Task Force Helmand, based in the town of Lashkar Gah, where the commander of British troops, Brigadier James Chiswell, gave him an update on progress in delivering security to the area and developing partnerships with the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police.</p>
<p>He then visited troops from The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, at Check Point Attal.</p>
<p>The base is located on Route 601, to the west of Lashkar Gah, where maintaining freedom of movement for local people while disrupting the insurgents is a key role for the troops.</p>
<p>The General then met members of 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, and their ANA partners, in Patrol Base Shahzad, in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand, before going on to visit members of 1st Battalion The Irish Guards at Camp Shorobak.</p>
<p>At Camp Bastion, the main British operating base in Helmand, Sir Peter visited the headquarters of Regional Command (South West) and Joint Force Support, witnessed training to deal with the threat of roadside bombs, and visited a number of other units.</p>
<p>He told soldiers at Camp Shorobak: &#8220;Your job of training the Afghan forces is our main effort &#8211; that and development of Afghan governance is our strategy. You men can be proud of your efforts and what you have achieved. Keep up the good work.&#8221;</p>
