<p>Britain is urgently reviewing its arms export licences to Bahrain after a fierce military crackdown killed five anti-government protesters in the Gulf kingdom.</p>
<p>More than 200 people were injured as riot police attacked demonstrators and tanks were sent on to the streets.</p>
<p>Hundreds of cartridges of tear gas and other riot control equipment have been licensed for export to Bahrain in the past nine months, Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said.</p>
<p>They and other licensing decisions now face being &#8220;urgently revoked&#8221; if they are found to breach UK and EU export criteria.</p>
<p>&#8220;We closely consider allegations of human rights abuses,&#8221; Mr Burt said. &#8220;We will not authorise any exports which, we assess, might provoke or prolong regional or internal conflicts, which might be used to facilitate internal repression, or which would in any other way be contrary to the criteria.</p>
<p>&#8220;In light of events we are formally reviewing recent licensing decisions for exports to Bahrain. We will urgently revoke licences if we judge that they are no longer in line with the criteria.&#8221;</p>
<p>Five people were killed after riot police attacked demonstrators on Thursday, swinging clubs and firing tear gas. The Health Ministry said 231 people were wounded in the violence. Along with two who died in clashes on Monday, the death toll this week now stands at seven.</p>
<p>The island nation&#8217;s Sunni rulers launched the crackdown in an attempt to snuff out several days of anti-government protests. The pre-dawn assault involved police tearing down protesters&#8217; tents, beating men and women inside and blasting some with shotgun sprays of birdshot.</p>
<p>Bahrain is the latest Middle East country to be hit by a wave of unrest which has already toppled presidents in Tunisia and Egypt.</p>
<p>The US expressed &#8220;deep concern&#8221; and urged restraint. And human rights groups urged the Bahraini authorities to order security forces to stop attacks on peaceful protesters and investigate the deaths.</p>
