The place of the humble sprout at the heart of the traditional Christmas meal could be under threat from an unexpected rival – Victorian beetroot.

A range of unusually coloured beets have been launched in time for the Christmas season.

Three varieties of heritage beetroot – golden, white and chioggia – are available from Tuesday in Sainsbury’s.

The supermarket says the golden variety has a delicate and sweet taste.

White is extra sweet, and the seasonal favourite, chioggia, has a subtle aroma and taste.

The beets were seen as a delicacy more than 100 years ago in the UK but remain popular now in Spain and the Middle East.

And the vegetables could offer solace to the army of diners left distraught by the taste of sprouts.

The Taste the Difference Heritage Beetroot will be priced at £2 a bunch.

The chioggia variety, also called candy striped by Sainsbury’s, boasts a distinctive red and white pattern.

It originates from the Italian coastal town of Chioggia, near Venice.
