The lives of many people were “touched in ways they could never have imagined” following the shootings of Derrick Bird, an inquest jury has been told.

The panel of six women and five men heard that the events of June 2 last year, in which 13 people including taxi driver Bird died, were “unprecedented”.

The hearing in Workington will analyse all the deaths in chronological order and is expected to last more than four weeks.

Up to 75 witnesses are expected to give evidence in person, while statements from others will be read out.

The hearing will investigate the deaths of Bird’s twin brother, David, 52; Bird’s solicitor, Kevin Commons, 60; Bird’s taxi driver colleague, Darren Rewcastle, 43; mother-of-two Susan Hughes, 57; retired security worker Kenneth Fishburn, 71; part-time mole catcher Isaac Dixon, 65; retired couple James and Jennifer Jackson, 67 and 68; farmer and rugby league player Garry Purdham, 31; retired Sellafield worker Michael Pike, 64; pensioner Jane Robinson, 66; estate agent Jamie Clark, 23; and Bird himself.

Bird, 52, from Rowrah, also injured 11 other people as he drove around during his shooting spree in Lamplugh, Frizington, Whitehaven, Egremont, Gosforth and Seascale before he was found dead in a wooded area near Boot – just over three hours after the body of Mr Commons was discovered.

After swearing in the jury, HM Coroner for North and West Cumbria David Roberts told the jury: “The events of June 2 were unprecedented. Many people’s lives were touched in ways they can never have imagined.

“To properly understand these proceedings you will have to hear and understand distressing and emotional evidence.

“Your role in this case cannot be overstated. You will be making the final findings, you will be returning the verdicts.”

The inquests are taking place at the Energus centre in Workington.
