<p>Britain has called on the government of Bahrain to move towards greater social and political freedom for its people, after King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa ordered a national dialogue to resolve the crisis in the Gulf state.</p>
<p>The Foreign Office announced on Friday night that a range of licences for arms exports to Bahrain were being revoked following a swift review sparked by the authorities&#8217; violent suppression of protests. </p>
<p>Other licences for exports to Libya were also revoked, while a review continues in relationship to Yemen, where there has also been unrest. The licences cover items which could be used for internal repression, such as tear gas, components for rifles and machine guns, ammunition and riot control equipment.</p>
<p>Foreign Office minister Alistair Burt said there was &#8220;no evidence of British equipment being used in the unrest in Bahrain&#8221;, where reports suggest that troops have used live ammunition against thousands of marchers defying a government ban on demonstrations.</p>
<p>A Ministry of Health official in the country said at least 50 people were injured in Friday&#8217;s clashes.</p>
<p>After five days of protests and at least five deaths in Bahrain &#8211; home to an important US military air base &#8211; King Hamad announced he had asked his eldest son, Crown Prince Salman, to start a dialogue &#8220;with all parties&#8221;.</p>
<p>Speaking on state television, the prince said: &#8220;Youths are going out on the street believing that they have no future in the country, while others are going out to express their love and loyalty. But this is for you all, for all the Shiites and Sunnis.&#8221;</p>
<p>The removal of the Sunni Muslim royal family has been a demand of many protesters from Bahrain&#8217;s Shiite majority population.</p>
<p>Foreign Secretary William Hague welcomed the king&#8217;s proposal for talks between the communities. Mr Hague said: &#8220;Bahrain should take further steps on reforms that meet legitimate aspirations for greater social and political freedoms.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added: &#8220;I am alarmed by reports of soldiers firing on protesters in Bahrain. This is an extremely worrying development. The circumstances of what happened are not yet clear, but I call on the Bahrain authorities to avoid violence and the use of excessive force and to exercise restraint.&#8221;</p>
