		</div><p>David Cameron has admitted that Britain will have to &#8220;think through&#8221; the costs associated with a Brexit after a crunch meeting of Europe heads of State tonight writes Elaine Loughlin, Political Reporter in Brussels.</p>
<p>Speaking after the 28 European leaders met for the first time since the Brexit vote, Mr Cameron tonight said: &#8220;It&#8217;s a sad night for me because I didn&#8217;t want to be in this position.</p>
<p>&#8220;I fought very hard for what I believed in.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the EU Council summit Mr Cameron gave a presentation on the background to and run up to the referendum.</p>
<p>Taoiseach Enda Kenny also emphasised Irish relationship with UK is at its strongest, he stressed the importance of a common travel area, the peace process and open borders.</p>
<p>At a press briefing after the crunch meeting which ended at 11.30pm (Brussels time) Mr Cameron said that Britain could not have the full benefits of membership without the costs which the government would have to &#8220;think through&#8221;.</p>
<p>However, he added that maintaining a good relationship with Europe and its member States is much more important for him than staying on as Prime Minister.</p>
<p>Mr Cameron said: &#8220;At the end of the day you fight for what you believe in, if you win good and if you lose you have to accept the verdict and the verdict I accept is not only that Britain has voted to leave the European Union but that it is right for a fresh leader to come along and take on that challenge of the next chapter in our country&#8217;s story.&#8221;</p>
<p>He said he would start to work of setting out the options of an exit from the EU for the new Prime Minister.</p>
