Why aye, pet … Cheryl Cole has landed a dubious honour – as the star after whom most people would like to name their dog.

The Fight For This Love singer was the top choice for female dogs, ahead of rivals such as Victoria Beckham and Madonna.

Top male choice was Ozzy – after Black Sabbath star Ozzy Osbourne – in the poll commissioned by National Geographic for its Nat Geo Wild channel.

Asked about their favourite traditional names for pets, the survey found Alfie was top choice, followed by Buster and Barney.

The top choices for female dogs were: (1) Cheryl, (2) Posh, (3) Lady Gaga, (4) Grace Kelly and (5) Beyonce.

While the top choices for male dogs were: (1) Ozzy, (2) Boris, (3) Arnie, (4) Elvis and (5) Bono.
