<p>George Clooney is adapting Enron, the hit British play about the decline of the energy company shortly before the financial crisis, for the big screen.</p>
<p>The Hollywood star is to co-produce the film adaptation of the play and is also likely to direct the project, The Observer reports.</p>
<p>Producer Laura Ziskin confirmed to the Observer she had bought the film rights to the play and had joined forces with George on the project as he was a big fan of the play.</p>
<p>Lucy Prebble&#8217;s play was a sell-out in Chichester and at London&#8217;s Royal Court theatre, during its run in the West End and on a nationwide tour.</p>
<p>The witty satire moved to Broadway, starring Sam West as an ambitious businessman overcome by greed, but the production was a flop in the US, closing after just 15 performances.</p>
<p>Laura suggested the reason the stage production was not a hit with US audiences is they may have felt uncomfortable about being satirised by a foreign company.</p>
<p>She said: &#8220;Maybe Americans didn&#8217;t want that mirror held up to them at that moment.&#8221;</p>
<p>Playwright Lucy is writing the screenplay but none of the original British cast will be involved in the film.</p>
