		</div><p>Donald Trump has done a U-turn on his controversial suggestion that women should be punished for seeking abortions if they are ever banned.</p>
<p>The ‘pro-life with exceptions’ Republican presidential candidate said in a later statement that abortion providers – not women – should be the ones punished if the law in the US is changed.</p>
<p>He said: “If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” he said.</p>
<p>The tycoon added: “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb.”</p>
<p>Trump had said during a town hall interview earlier on Wednesday that women who get abortions should receive “some form of punishment” if abortion is banned, though he did not expand on how.</p>
