Eurosceptics step up no-deal Brexit calls as May battles to keep her plan alive

with Boris Johnson stating that a no-deal Brexit was closest to what people voted for in the referendum&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He used his Daily Telegraph column to dismiss &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;downright apocalyptic” messages about a Brexit on World Trade Organisation &lpar;WTO&rpar; terms&comma; arguing that people could &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;sort fact for nonsense”&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Johnson said&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;They didn’t vote for anything like Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement&period; They voted to come out&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It is no deal or WTO terms that actually corresponds to their idea of coming out&comma; and they view that option with a confidence that is now directly proportional to the growing strength of the Government’s warnings against it&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<div class&equals;"pa-big-number-value">&NewLine;<div class&equals;"pa-big-number-value-inner">209<&sol;div>&NewLine;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<div class&equals;"pa-big-number-context">Number of MPs who have signed a letter to the Prime Minister urging her to rule out a no-deal<&sol;div>&NewLine;<div><&sol;div>&NewLine;<div>A paper written by Tory former Cabinet minister Lord Lilley&comma; along with Labour Leave general secretary Brendan Chilton&comma; also backed a WTO-style Brexit&comma; claiming that concerns raised about the approach were similar to fears about the Millennium Bug&period;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<div><&sol;div>&NewLine;<div>&NewLine;<p>Their report said&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It would be rash to predict that &OpenCurlyQuote;everything will be all right on the night’&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Unforeseen problems may arise&comma; and some businesses may fail to prepare for foreseable problems&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;But experience suggests that if one prepares for them&comma; what could have been major problems turn out to be minor&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>It was &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;likely to turn out nearer the Millennium Bug than Armageddon”&comma; they said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In preparation for a no-deal Brexit&comma; a major exercise is being carried out in Kent involving more than 100 lorries&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The trial will test out Manston airfield near Ramsgate as a mass HGV holding bay to ease congestion on roads to Channel ports<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But 209 MPs from across the Commons have now signed a letter to the Prime Minister urging her to rule out a no-deal Brexit&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The letter was organised by Tory former Cabinet minister Dame Caroline Spelman and Labour’s Jack Dromey&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Dame Caroline told BBC Radio 4’s Westminster Hour&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Crashing out of the EU without a deal will cause job losses and bring to an end the renaissance of manufacturing that we’ve seen in regions like mine in the West Midlands&comma; and both Jack Dromey and I know the human interest and impact of this&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>All signatories to the letter have been invited to meet the Prime Minister in Downing Street on Tuesday&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The meeting is one of a series being organised by Mrs May&comma; who is also hosting drinks receptions for Tory MPs on Monday and Wednesday as part of an charm offensive to win support for the Brexit deal&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mrs May has warned the UK will be in &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;uncharted territory” if the deal is rejected in the vote&comma;
