<p>The wife of former prime minister Gordon Brown wishes she had &#8220;spoken up more&#8221; for him as he battled to hold on to power.</p>
<p>Sarah Brown, whose memoir on life at 10 Downing Street is published next month, spoke in a newspaper interview of her frustration that her husband&#8217;s public image did not match that of the &#8220;hard-working, fun, smart, decent man&#8221; she married.</p>
<p>She told the Daily Mail: &#8220;When I look back on it, maybe the one thing I would have changed about my role is that I would have spoken up more.</p>
<p>&#8220;When things were going wrong, and I was reading stories about him that simply were not true, I wonder whether I should have got more involved &#8211; to say: &#8216;This is just not the case&#8217;.</p>
<p>&#8220;The one thing that I could have done to make a difference was to be more vocal.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mrs Brown, who said she was inspired to hail her husband as a &#8220;hero&#8221; at the Labour Party Conference after watching Hillary Clinton praise Barack Obama in a speech, told the newspaper he was &#8220;misunderstood&#8221; and misrepresented.</p>
<p>She said: &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t fair. It wasn&#8217;t right. Yet when you are in that moment, you think you have no alternative but to take it. It is the most frustrating position to be in.&#8221;</p>
<p>The mother of two young boys admitted there were times when being the wife of the prime minister took its toll.</p>
<p>She describes three fainting fits in the book, which she dubs &#8220;little episodes of exhaustion&#8221;, and even needed to be treated with oxygen after one.</p>
<p>Mrs Brown said: &#8220;I was as guilty as anyone of taking on too much. There were days, especially when there had been a lot of foreign travel, when I had to say to the people around me: &#8216;Look, I need to take a few days to see the kids.'&#8221;</p>
