The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were attacked as tuition fees demonstrations descended into vandalism and violence.

Up to 20 demonstrators attacked the vehicle with fists, boots and bottles, chanting “Off with their heads!” and “Tory scum”.

Charles and Camilla were visibly shaken after their armoured car was targeted as the royal couple made their way to an engagement in central London.

The car was daubed in paint and a rear window shattered as protesters vented their fury after MPs voted to raise tuition fees.

Camilla later joked about the incident, saying “First time for everything” as she left the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that their Royal Highnesses’ car was attacked by the protesters on the way to their engagement at the London Palladium this evening. Both their Royal Highnesses were unharmed.”

The attack came after large parts of central London were turned into a battleground.

Benches were set alight in Parliament Square, Winston Churchill’s statue, was vandalised, windows were smashed at the Treasury and the Supreme Court and protesters rampaged up Oxford Street.

Police and protesters were taken to hospital as fierce running battles broke out repeatedly through the day. Students hurled missiles at lines of heavily armed police who responded by striking protesters with batons and charging them on horseback.

The violent protest sparked widespread condemnation. Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokeswoman also said he condemned the “unacceptable” violence.
