Former aide to Nigel Farage, Raheem Kassam, quits race for UKIP leadership

a former aide to Nigel Farage&comma; has quit the race to become UKIP leader three days after launching his campaign in a Westminster pub&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Kassam said he has realised &&num;8220&semi;the path to victory is too narrow&&num;8221&semi; and urged his supporters to back former London mayoral candidate Peter Whittle&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>His announcement comes with nominations for the UKIP leadership set to close at noon today&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In a statement&comma; Mr Kassam said&colon; <i>&&num;8220&semi;As of today&comma; I am formally suspending my campaign for UKIP leader&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;After much consideration&comma; I have decided not to pursue my campaign to be UKIP leader any further&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;This was a very difficult decision&comma; and I want to thank everyone who supported me in the process&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;It is a decision I have not taken lightly&comma; but following meetings this weekend I realised the path to victory is too narrow&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;I would encourage my supporters to back Peter Whittle&comma; who I think would make a fantastic leader of the party&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;i><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Kassam revealed that he has not raised enough money for his leadership bid to be any more than a digital campaign based in Westminster&comma; although he had enough funds for his deposit&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><i>&&num;8220&semi;To not feature at events all around the country would have made me a hypocrite&comma; given how much I criticise the establishment for ignoring the country&comma;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;i> he said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He will encourage donors to choose what happens with the remainder of the campaign funds&comma; suggesting either donations to the Royal British Legion or Help For Heroes charities&comma; or donations to UKIP or Mr Whittle&&num;8217&semi;s campaign&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><i>&&num;8220&semi;Those who want refunds are welcome to contact me&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;i>&comma; he added&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Kassam&comma; who edits the right-wing news website Breitbart London&comma; also complained of &&num;8220&semi;disgraceful treatment by the media&&num;8221&semi; and accused Ukip of treating the leadership election &&num;8220&semi;like a coronation&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He said he has complained numerous times to Ukip chairman Paul Oakden about MEPs using party databases to &&num;8220&semi;effectively campaign against me&&num;8221&semi;&comma; insisting it was &&num;8220&semi;ostensibly against the rules&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Kassam had the backing of UKIP&&num;8217&semi;s biggest donor Arron Banks&comma; but he revealed they <i>&&num;8220&semi;never discussed money&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;i><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He tweeted&colon; <i>&&num;8220&semi;Arron did not pull his support but I never wanted to take big cheques from singular donors&period; We never discussed money&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;i><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He also said he would be pursuing a harassment complaint against a reporter from The Times&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><i>&&num;8220&semi;I am tough and I can take it&comma; but when Times journalists show up at my elderly parents&&num;8217&semi; house at dusk&comma; intimidating them&comma; I draw the line&comma;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;i> Mr Kassam said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>UKIP&&num;8217&semi;s only MP&comma; Douglas Carswell&comma; appeared to welcome the news that Mr Kassam had quit the race&comma; tweeting an emoji depicting a smiley face wearing sunglasses shortly after the announcement&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Kassam launched his campaign on Friday from bet and the bar at the Westminster Arms pub&comma; declaring that <i>&&num;8220&semi;amateur hour is over&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;i><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Reading from notes resting on the beer taps&comma; Mr Kassam insisted he was the <i>&&num;8220&semi;Faragist&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;i> candidate in the election before pulling himself a pint of Spitfire and drinking it&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But his decision to halt his campaign to Make UKIP Great Again&comma; an echo of Donald Trump&&num;8217&semi;s US presidential election slogan&comma; adds to the sense of turmoil in the party since Diane James quit as leader after just 18 days&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>MEP Steven Woolfe&comma;
