McDonald&&num;8217&semi;s&comma; Mars and Pizza Hut to sign a new promise to cut salt and trans-fats in foods&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has written to all members of the Food Network asking for a written commitment to put calories on menus&comma; ban harmful trans-fats and cut salt&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The scheme is voluntary after the Government made it clear it wants to avoid regulating food companies&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Under the plan&comma; restaurants&comma; fast food outlets&comma; take-aways&comma; cafes&comma; pubs&comma; sandwich shops and staff canteens would sign up to put calorie labels on their menus from this September&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>While many companies include nutritional information on their websites&comma; government officials do not believe this goes far enough&period; Firms would also cut salt in a wide range of foods to achieve &&num;8220&semi;specific&comma; stretching targets by 2012&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The aim is to cut the average salt intake for an adult to 6g a day &&num;8211&semi; from the current average of 8&period;6g&period; For example&comma; by 2012&comma; 100g of sausages would have 1&period;13g of salt&comma; 100g of tomato ketchup would have 1&period;83g of salt and 100g of pasta sauce &lpar;excluding pesto&rpar; would have 0&period;83g of salt&period; A 100g slice of pizza would have 1g of salt on average&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>According to Food Standards Agency &lpar;FSA&rpar; calculations&comma; cutting salt intake to 6g a day could prevent an average of 20&comma;200 premature deaths a year&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>According to the Government scheme&comma; businesses would &&num;8220&semi;once and for all&&num;8221&semi; remove artificial trans-fats from their products by the end of this year&period; Officials believe this would be at a faster pace and at less cost to the taxpayer than if legislation was brought in&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Firms are already in discussions about a new &&num;8220&semi;responsibility deal&&num;8221&semi; on the content of foods as well as how they are packaged and labelled&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Food Network is backed by Mr Lansley and includes representatives for major food companies&comma; the Department of Health and charities&period;
