<p>Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has vowed to fight to the &#8220;last man and last woman&#8221; to defend his hold on power.</p>
<p>Gaddafi addressed supporters and foreign media in a conference hall in the capital Tripoli as his forces were launching a counter-offensive against parts of the rebel-held eastern half of the country.</p>
<p>&#8220;We will fight until the last man and woman. We will defend Libya from the north to the south,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>He also warned &#8220;thousands of Libyans&#8221; will die if the US or Nato intervene in his country, as his forces were launching a counter-offensive against parts of the rebel-held eastern half of the country.</p>
<p>The US is moving naval and air forces closer to Libyan shores and is calling for Gaddafi to give up power immediately.</p>
<p>Gaddafi also claimed Libya&#8217;s oil fields and ports were &#8220;safe&#8221; and &#8220;under control&#8221; and said he would replace Western banks and companies by others from China, Russia and Brazil.</p>
