Gove admits he was ‘fortunate’ to avoid jail for cocaine use

Mr Gove said&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;I was fortunate in that I didn’t&comma; but I do think it was a profound mistake and I have seen the damage drugs do&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The former British justice secretary said&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;I have seen it close up and I have also seen it in the work that I have done as a politician&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;That is why I deeply regret the mistake that I made&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Metropolitan Police chief Cressida Dick has told middle-class drug users they have &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;blood on their hands” for financing a trade that results in gangland violence and the deaths of youngsters on the streets&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Gove told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;I hugely respect Cressida Dick&period; One of the things that I would absolutely say is it is a mistake which I profoundly regret&period; Absolutely&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;One of the things that I also completely agree with is that the drugs trade is wrong&comma; that drugs wreck lives and that’s one of the reasons why I have sought&comma; in office&comma; to try to help people to move away from that&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Gove faced claims of hypocrisy over a column he wrote for The Times hitting out at &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;London’s liberal consensus” around decriminalisation of drugs&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>According to the Mail on Sunday&comma; Mr Gove hosted a party the night before the column was published in which the Class A drug was allegedly taken by guests&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Asked by Marr whether he was a hypocrite&comma; Mr Gove said&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;No&period; I think anyone can read the article and make their own minds up&period; The point that I made in the article is that if any of us lapse sometimes from standards that we uphold&comma; that is human&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;The thing to do is not necessarily then to say that the standards should be lowered&period; It should be to reflect on the lapse and to seek to do better in the future&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Environment Secretary insisted that his cocaine confession would not bar him from entry to the United States if he became prime minister and it was &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;foolish to suggest otherwise”&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He said &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;no-one asked” about it when he became a government minister&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He said &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;I don’t believe that I have ever on any occasion failed to tell the truth about this when asked directly”&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>British Home Secretary Sajid Javid&comma; a leadership rival to Mr Gove&comma; told Sky News &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It’s not for me to pass judgment on fellow candidates” but added&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;People do need to know – it doesn’t matter if you are middle class or not – anyone who takes class A drugs&comma;
