Jon Hamm has admitted he does like to take a break from playing Mad Men playboy Don Draper sometimes.

The 39-year-old actor – who has starred in the award-winning TV show for five series – enjoys his role as the free-spirited businessman with an eye for the ladies, but also likes the chance to explore other characters through his film work.

Jon told The Independent: “I guess the difficulty with playing in a television series is that you get to play the same role over and over again. And while it’s fun and I love doing the show, it’s nice to get the opportunity to do different things.

“What I’ve tried to do for the majority of my career is to do different things that are challenging and exciting in different ways.”

Jon, who has recently played an FBI agent trying to catch a top bank robber in Ben Affleck’s The Town, appears in new Allen Ginsberg biopic Howl and later this year plays the villain in Zack Snyder’s much-hyped action blockbuster Sucker Punch.

A fifth series of Mad Men is also in the pipeline, with Jon promising fans he doesn’t think it will necessarily be the last.

And he still hasn’t tired of playing Don Draper.

He said: “I think we’ll keep going as long as the story is interesting to tell – and I don’t know how long that will be.

“We’ve now shot four seasons, 52 episodes of it, and I think there are still a lot of deep dramatic stories still to be mined in that character. I’m glad I don’t have to think them up; I’m glad it’s someone else’s job. But I’ll keep doing it as long as they will have me.
