		</div><p>Idris Elba has revealed it is “hard” shooting his Luther scenes.</p>
<p>The 43-year-old actor, who reprises his role as DCI John Luther in the fourth series of the BBC One thriller, admitted it is not easy stepping back into the maverick detective’s shoes.</p>
<p>“Luther is very hard to play, and hard to be in. It’s a very dark show to make and it isn’t easy mentally, but it’s part of my job,” the star said.</p>
<p>“I always go to Luther when I’m at my most grumpiest. It’s like ‘I feel s**t, let’s do some Luther’. Because if I do it when I’m happy, it’ll drag me down.”</p>
<p>He added: “After a two-year break with a character like that, you do have to get back into the construct of him.</p>
<p>“Working on the script in the early part was all part of that process and then Sam Miller, who is an amazing director, and I tried to get back into the mindset of what he was trying to achieve and what I was trying to achieve, and that’s how it sort of grew.”</p>
<p>The new series of Luther, which returns for a two-part special after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, sees the detective taking time out of London after the death of his colleague DS Justin Ripley, played by Warren Brown.</p>
<p>“We all miss Ripley, that’s for sure,” Idris said.</p>
<p>“Anyone like John Luther, who gets so close to anyone, will miss when someone dies and that was definitely heartbreaking but his presence will be felt in this one. I think Luther’s karma tapped him on the shoulder and said ‘Chill out’.”</p>
<p>Although the star may find playing Luther challenging, he said it is one of the easiest characters he gets to portray.</p>
<p>“Luther is one of the only characters that I don’t actually have to do too much application of accents and walks or anything. I just show up in costume and I’m in,” he explained.</p>
<p>“There’s a real connection to that. People meet me in real life and say I’m different to Luther, but the truth is, when I get on set and put the coat on, I slip into that character quite easily.”</p>
<p>Luther returns to BBC One on December 15.</p>
