Iraqi forces push into two more villages near Mosul

a rights group has called for a probe into a suspected a<br &sol;>&NewLine;ir strike which hit a mosque on Friday&comma; killing more than a dozen civilians&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Iraqi special forces began shelling IS positions before dawn near Bartella&comma; a historically Christian town to the east of Mosul which they had retaken last week&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>With patriotic music blaring from loudspeakers on their Humvees&comma; they then pushed into the village of Tob Zawa&comma; about five miles from Mosul&comma; amid heavy clashes&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Iraqi Federal Police&comma; a military-style force&comma; pushed into a small village in the Shura district south of Mosul&comma; where they fired a large anti-aircraft gun and rocket-propelled grenades as they battled Islamic State &lpar;IS&rpar; militants&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>They later appeared to have secured the village&comma; a cluster of squat homes on a desert plain&comma; and handed out water and other aid to civilians&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The US-led coalition said it had carried out six air strikes near Mosul&comma; destroying 19 fighting positions and 17 vehicles&comma; as well as rocket and mortar launchers&comma; artillery and tunnels&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Human Rights Watch has called for an investigation into last week&&num;8217&semi;s purported air strike in northern Iraq which struck the women&&num;8217&semi;s section of a Shia mosque in the town of Daquq&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The strike happened amid a large IS assault on the nearby city of Kirkuk which was meant to distract the Iraqi forces and their allies from the massive operation around Mosul&comma; the country&&num;8217&semi;s second largest city&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The IS attack on Kirkuk&comma; about 100 miles south-east of Mosul&comma; lasted for two days and killed at least 80 people&comma; mainly members of the Kurdish security forces&comma; who assumed control of the city in 2014 as Iraqi forces crumbled before an IS advance&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Human Rights Watch said Daquq&&num;8217&semi;s residents believe Friday&&num;8217&semi;s attack was an air strike because of the extent of the destruction and because planes could be heard flying overhead&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The New York-based watchdog said at least 13 people were reported killed&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The US-led coalition and the Iraqi military&comma; which are waging the offensive to drive IS from Mosul&comma; are the only parties known to be flying military aircraft over Iraq&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>US military spokesman Col John Dorrian said the coalition had &&num;8220&semi;definitively determined&&num;8221&semi; that it did not conduct the air strike that killed civilians in Daquq&comma; and had shared its findings with the Iraqi government&comma; which is carrying out its own investigation&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;The Coalition uses precision munitions and an exhaustive process to reduce the possibility of civilian casualties and collateral damage because the preservation of civilian life is &lpar;of&rpar; paramount importance to us&comma;&&num;8221&semi; Col Dorrian said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Iraqi Brig Gen Yahya Rasool&comma; the spokesman for the Joint Military Command&comma; confirmed the Iraqi government was investigating the attack&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He declined to say whether Iraqi or coalition planes were flying in the area at the time of the explosion&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>As in Kirkuk&comma; IS launched an attack on the western Iraqi town of Rutba&comma; hundreds of miles away from Mosul&comma; on Sunday&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Brig Gen Rasool said the situation there &&num;8220&semi;is completely under control&&num;8221&semi;&comma; and IS militants have no presence inside the town&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But Col Dorrian&comma; the coalition spokesman&comma; said &&num;8220&semi;Iraqi forces continue to attack the enemy with coalition air support&&num;8221&semi; in Rutba&comma; and that &&num;8220&semi;operations are ongoing&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He said coalition air strikes have destroyed five IS vehicles and killed a &&num;8220&semi;significant&&num;8221&semi; number of militants in the town&comma; in Iraq&&num;8217&semi;s sprawling Anbar province&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The IS-run Aamaq news agency posted a video online that it said showed fighters attacking a military position on Sunday north of Rumba&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>It said several groups of fighters had infiltrated the town&comma; setting off two car bombs&comma; while other militants attacked the perimeter&period; Those claims could not be independently confirmed&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The campaign to retake Mosul comes after months of planning and involves more than 25&comma;000 Iraqi troops&comma; Kurdish forces&comma; Sunni tribal fighters and state-sanctioned Shia militias&period; It is expected to take weeks&comma; if not months&comma; to drive IS out of Iraq&&num;8217&semi;s second largest city&comma; which is still home to more than a million people&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The militants captured Mosul in the summer of 2014&comma; when they swept across much of northern and western Iraq&period;
