The decision to host the 14th European Maccabi Games in Berlin’s Olympic Park was a difficult one, organiser Alon Meyer said, but should be seen as a “signal of reconciliation” 70 years after the end of the Second World War.

The games, being held from July 27 to August 5, take place every four years and were last staged in Vienna.

This year, some 2,300 athletes from 38 countries are expected.

Though only Jewish athletes can compete in events, “Let’s Play Together” matches are also being staged with non-Jewish professional and celebrity teams.
