<p>A judge in the United States threatened to have a defendant&#8217;s mouth duct-taped shut after he caused a disruption in court, a lawyer has said.</p>
<p>Duniek Christian, 26, appeared before Judge Elizabeth Kobly in Ohio last week on a charge of obstructing official business and a traffic offence.</p>
<p>Christian used expletives and shouted at the judge because he wanted a jury trial, not a bench trial, said his former lawyer, David Gerchak.</p>
<p>He said the judge repeatedly held his client in contempt and finally asked officers in court to get some duct tape.</p>
<p>Mr Gerchak has resigned as Christian&#8217;s lawyer and it was unclear who was replacing him.</p>
<p>Mr Gerchak said he did not know if the judge was serious, but as for his former client, &#8220;the threat certainly got to him&#8221;.</p>
<p>According to a police report, Christian already had been sentenced to 230 days in jail for contempt of court by the time the judge asked police to intervene and remove him.</p>
<p>&#8220;She further ordered he not be returned until his mouth was duct-taped shut,&#8221; the police officer wrote in the report.</p>
<p>Christian tried to physically resist officers and was yelling vulgarities as he was taken out of court, the officer wrote.</p>
