<p>The King&#8217;s Speech is ruling the UK and Ireland box office as the number one film.</p>
<p>The film, starring Colin Firth as King George VI as he copes with his impromptu ascension to the throne with the support of his wife, played by Helena Bonham Carter and an unusual Australian speech therapist, played by Geoffrey Rush, took £3,510,000 in its opening weekend in the UK from 395 cinemas.</p>
<p>The drama, directed by Tom Hooper, earned film makers Momentum Pictures their biggest ever opening weekend as it knocked comedy Gulliver&#8217;s Travels off the top spot, following its release on Friday January 7.</p>
<p>The King&#8217;s Speech is doing well in the US box office too, in the top 10 at number eight and taking 6.8 million dollars in the last week and over 33 million dollars in total since it opened in American cinemas.</p>
<p>The film, which contains some swearing in the context of speech exercises as the king learns to conquer his stammer, is rated an R in the US, but was downgraded from a 15 to a 12A in the UK so that children can attend the family film if accompanied by an adult.</p>
<p>The King&#8217;s Speech and its stars have been winning awards already and are tipped to do well at the Oscars this year.</p>
