<p>A majority of Lebanese lawmakers have voted to support a prime ministerial candidate backed by Iranian ally Hezbollah.</p>
<p>Najib Mikati has 68 votes, while caretaker prime minister Saad Hariri has 60.</p>
<p>The Shiite militant group is now in a position to control Lebanon&#8217;s next government.</p>
<p>The move has set off angry protests and drew warnings from the US that its support could be in jeopardy.</p>
<p>Thousands of Sunnis waved flags, burned tyres and torched a van belonging to news agency Al-Jazeera during a &#8220;day of rage&#8221; to protest against the gains by Hezbollah.</p>
