<p>A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was rescued from the freezing sea while trying to rescue his dogs.</p>
<p>The man and a 13-year-old daughter lost the two Jack Russells on Brighton seafront, opposite the Queens Hotel, just after midday and both entered the water, but soon got into difficulties.</p>
<p>A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said the teenager was quickly recovered in rough seas but the man was washed out more than 30 metres towards the pier in sea temperatures of five degrees.</p>
<p>He was lifted from the sea by the Brighton RNLI inshore lifeboat and airlifted to the Royal Sussex Hospital.</p>
<p>The girl is also at the hospital but she is not thought to be seriously injured.</p>
<p>Colin Griffiths, Duty Watch Manager at Solent Coastguard, said: &#8220;Dogs will generally return to their owners after a swim and it is not worth the risk for individuals to go into seas of temperatures generally at about 4 to 5 degrees Celsius this time of year.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Hypothermia and cold shock will set in very, very quickly and survivability is slim.&#8221;</p>
<p>One of the dogs has been found but the other is missing.</p>
