<p>X Factor champion Matt Cardle has started the new year the way he ended 2010 &#8211; sitting pretty on top of the charts.</p>
<p>He held off Rihanna&#8217;s What&#8217;s My Name to take the top slot for the third week running with his cover of Biffy Clyro&#8217;s When We Collide.</p>
<p>But he fell just short of achieving the biggest selling single of the year. That honour went to Eminem&#8217;s Love The Way You Are, a song featuring R&#038;B star Rihanna.</p>
<p>The rapper&#8217;s top seller was snapped up by 854,000 people during 2010. Cardle managed to sell 815,000 copies of his hit single.</p>
<p>Over in the album charts, Rihanna&#8217;s Loud crept up from second position to start 2011 at the top.</p>
<p>It pushed Take That&#8217;s Progress down one spot. But members of the group could still raise a glass of bubbly in the knowledge that theirs was 2010&#8217;s biggest selling album. And it took the title by some distance, selling 1.84 million copies, 610,000 more than its closest rival.</p>
<p>Canadian crooner Michael Buble had the second biggest seller of the year with Crazy Love, while Lady Gaga&#8217;s The Fame came in third.</p>
<p>Plan B&#8217;s The Defamation of Strickland Banks experienced a new year bump, rising 18 places to become the third biggest selling album of the week. It helped him take the fifth spot in the list of best selling albums of the year.</p>
<p>The biggest selling compilation album of the year went to the latest in the Now That&#8217;s What I Call Music range. The series has now delivered 77 editions of chart toppers for the British public.</p>
<p>Numbers 76 and 75 in the range took the second and third places in 2010&#8217;s top selling compilation albums.</p>
