<p>President Barack Obama has pleaded for Americans not to use Saturday&#8217;s deadly rampage in Tucson as an occasion &#8220;to turn on one another&#8221;.</p>
<p>The President, speaking at a memorial in Tucson, Arizona, urged Americans to communicate in &#8220;a way that heals, not a way that wounds.&#8221;</p>
<p>Six people were killed and 13 wounded in the attack, including congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head.</p>
<p>Authorities say Ms Giffords was the target of the assault.</p>
<p>Mr Obama spoke at the end of a rousing service in a crowded University of Arizona arena. </p>
<p>His remarks alluded to the angry rhetoric that has taken hold in the aftermath of the shooting. Liberals and conservatives have argued over whether violent political imagery was a contributing factor in the attack.</p>
<p>&#8220;I believe we can be better,&#8221; Mr Obama said to a capacity crowd &#8211; and to countless others watching around the country. &#8220;Those who died here, those who saved lives here &#8211; they help me believe. We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Police say the man accused of the shootings, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, shot Ms Giffords as well as many in the line of people waiting to talk with her. The attack ended when bystanders tackled the man. He is in jail on federal charges as police continue to investigate.</p>
