a year-on-year increase of 21&percnt;&comma; according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But they appear to have used their limited disposable income for seasonal discounts on furniture and early annual holiday bookings instead of the high street January sales&comma; the report said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The travel sector saw a surge of 31&percnt; year-on-year and a 173&percnt; increase on the month earlier&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The average value of booked holidays was £886&comma; the highest recorded amount since December 2008&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The home and garden sector enjoyed a year-on-year increase of 56&percnt;&comma; while alcohol sales declined by 67&percnt;&comma; possibly following the excesses of the festive period&comma; and clothing&comma; footwear and accessories sales were down 39&percnt;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Chris Webster&comma; head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini&comma; said&colon; &&num;8220&semi;It seems that the British consumer is looking ahead to sunnier times and taking full advantage of the big new year sales offered by the major travel operators&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>IMRG spokeswoman Tina Spooner said&colon; &&num;8220&semi;While the index results for January show a very encouraging start to the year for e-retailers&comma; it is important to note this strong growth is on the back of the lowest-ever annual growth recorded in January last year when the e-retail market grew just 4&period;6&percnt;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;Sales of travel were strong during January&comma;
