<p>Those who have mocked city owners of off-road 4&#215;4 vehicles as having &#8220;Chelsea tractors&#8221; seem to know what they are talking about, according to a survey.</p>
<p>Chelsea in south-west London has the highest proportion of 4x4s in the UK, the poll by car insurance company Diamond found.</p>
<p>Based on a study, per postcode, of drivers, the survey showed that 17.8% of vehicles in Chelsea in SW3 were 4x4s.</p>
<p>Only slightly behind was Kensington in the W8 area of west London with a rate of 17.4%.</p>
<p>Third was Banchory in Aberdeenshire in Scotland (17%), with another Aberdeenshire area, Turriff, in fourth place with 16.4%.</p>
<p>The preponderance of 4x4s in suburban areas of southern England rather than in rural farming areas was shown by such spots as Guildford in Surrey, Wadhurst in Kent and Brentwood in Essex featuring in the top 10.</p>
<p>The poll also found the most-popular 4&#215;4 was the Range Rover followed by the Land Rover Freelander.</p>
<p>Occupation-wise, those most likely to drive a 4&#215;4 were haulage contractors, followed by bank directors, farmers and agricultural contractors.</p>
<p>Diamond managing director Elwyn Gedrych said: &#8220;Over recent years an array of new 4&#215;4 vehicles have entered the market, such as the Range Rover Sport. These have attracted the driver who wants the performance of a car but the size of a 4&#215;4, and can now be seen in large numbers on our roads.</p>
<p>&#8220;These vehicles are obviously particularly popular in Chelsea &#8211; in fact, almost one in five cars driven in Chelsea is a 4&#215;4.&#8221;</p>
