<p>Politicians, trade union and business leaders will join hundreds of postal workers at a national rally on Wednesday to protest against the Government&#8217;s controversial plans to privatise Royal Mail.</p>
<p>The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the event was aimed at giving MPs a &#8220;clear message of dissatisfaction&#8221; with the Postal Service Bill which paves the way for the privatisation.</p>
<p>The Bill is currently in committee stage and the union said it believed it contained &#8220;huge loopholes&#8221; which put at risk the universal service of nationwide deliveries at the same price, and the post office network.</p>
<p>Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: &#8220;If this legislation goes through it will mean the end of the postal service as we know it. Prices will sky rocket, the universal one-price-goes-anywhere service will be in jeopardy and post offices will close. If people think the weather has been bad for deliveries, you&#8217;ve not seen anything if the Government gets its way.&#8221;</p>
<p>Speakers at the rally in Westminster will include shadow business secretary John Denham, MPs Caroline Lucas (Greens), Mike Weir (SNP), Elfyn Llwyd (Plaid Cymru), Michael Connarty and Katy Clarke (both Labour) and Len McCluskey, general secretary elect of Unite.</p>
