<p>A shopping centre cancelled a show involving live penguins amid fears wildlife protesters would stage a demonstration.</p>
<p>The open air Riverside Shopping Centre in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was due to stage the event involving the animals.</p>
<p>But a statement on its website said it had been cancelled because the centre &#8220;could not guarantee the absence of a demonstration&#8221;.</p>
<p>The move comes after an event involving live penguins at world-renowned toy shop Hamleys in London was cancelled after it sparked fury from protesters.</p>
<p>A statement on Riverside&#8217;s website said: &#8220;Riverside Shopping Centre regrets to inform you that the live penguin event on Saturday 11th December will now be cancelled.</p>
<p>&#8220;It has come to our attention that there may be a demonstration risk from wildlife protesters regarding the event and although this is not guaranteed the safety and enjoyment of our customers&#8217; shopping experience is our only interest.&#8221;</p>
<p>The statement said the centre had adhered to all the rules and regulations for the penguins&#8217; appearance.</p>
<p>It added: &#8220;In summary, Riverside Shopping Centre has adhered to all regulations with regards to the event. It is renowned for its peaceful shopping atmosphere and as we cannot guarantee the absence of a demonstration we are not prepared to put the safety, wellbeing and enjoyment of our customers at risk.</p>
<p>&#8220;We apologise for any disappointment this may cause to our shoppers.&#8221;</p>
