BBC Radio 3 is to throw its entire schedule over to the works of Mozart, playing every work written by the composer and nothing else.

For almost a fortnight the station will broadcast recordings, documentaries, live performances and an acclaimed dramatisation of Mozart’s life.

Contemporary music programmes will not feature in the schedule for the duration of the season, which runs for the first 12 days of January.

The Genius Of Mozart season follows previous celebrations of Beethoven and Bach, but this will be the most extensive dedication to one composer yet.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will present a programme looking at her favourite Mozart arias and Sara Mohr-Pietsch will host a nightly programme Play Mozart For Me.

A special 700th edition of Private Passions will include former guests discussing their favourite pieces by the Salzburg-born composer.

A temporary drivetime programme will look at A History Of Mozart In A Dozen Objects.

And director Sir Peter Hall’s 1983 production of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus – later turned into an Oscar-winning film – will be aired again. It stars Paul Scofield as Salieri, Simon Callow as Mozart and Felicity Kendal as Constanze.

BBC orchestras and the BBC Singers will also be performing Mozart across the country, including a concert by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales who will play to commuters in Cardiff’s Central Station on January 4.

Online listeners will be able to hear all the Radio 3 Mozart broadcasts in HD sound.
