<p>China&#8217;s minister of railways is being investigated for &#8220;severe violation of discipline&#8221; and has been removed from a key political post.</p>
<p>The announcement of the investigation of Liu Zhijun comes as the top leaders in the ruling Communist Party try to stamp out corruption, which is a major threat to their authority.</p>
<p>Ministerial-level officials are rarely targeted in corruption probes and the investigation of Mr Liu is especially high-profile, given the huge investment China has made in high-speed rail service and the importance of the railway system in the country.</p>
<p>Xinhua News Agency reports that Mr Liu had already been removed from his post as the railway ministry&#8217;s Communist Party chief.</p>
