Russia denies ‘absurd’ claims by Montenegro over alleged coup plot

type&equals;"pubmine"&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab; data-siteid&equals;"111265417"&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab; data-section&equals;"2">&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;<&sol;amp-ad>&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;<&sol;div>&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;<&sol;div>&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;<&sol;div><p>Montenegro&&num;8217&semi;s special prosecutor has accused Russia and its secret service operatives of plotting a coup attempt that included plans to kill the Balkan country&&num;8217&semi;s former prime minister&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Prosecutor Milivoje Katnic said an investigation into the alleged plot last October to overthrow Montenegro&&num;8217&semi;s government and prevent it from joining Nato has shown &&num;8220&semi;that Russian state bodies were involved at a certain level&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said the claim was &&num;8220&semi;absurd&&num;8221&semi; and &&num;8220&semi;irresponsible&&num;8221&semi;&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;&&num;8220&semi;There can&&num;8217&semi;t be even talk about any sort of Russian officials&&num;8217&semi; interference into Montenegro&&num;8217&semi;s internal affairs&comma;&&num;8221&semi; said Dmitry Peskov&period; &&num;8220&semi;Russia hasn&&num;8217&semi;t interfered and isn&&num;8217&semi;t going to interfere into domestic affairs of other countries&comma; and in particular Montenegro with which we have very good relations&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Earlier&comma; Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov also denied what he described as &&num;8220&semi;unfounded accusations&&num;8221&semi;&comma; adding that they &&num;8220&semi;haven&&num;8217&semi;t been backed by a single fact&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Kremlin&comma; opposed to further Nato expansion in Europe&comma; has repeatedly denied involvement in the alleged plot&period; But it has actively supported nationalist groups opposed to Montenegro&&num;8217&semi;s Nato membership&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;Some 20 people&comma; mostly Serbian citizens&comma; have been arrested in Montenegro over the alleged election-day plot&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The prosecutor told Prva TV that Eduard Shishmakov&comma; an alleged Russian military spy&comma; was the main coordinator of the plot that included the taking over of the parliament in the capital&comma; Podgorica&comma; and the killing of then-prime minister Milo Djukanovic&comma; who brought the small nation to the threshold of Nato membership&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Shishmakov and another Russian operative reportedly coordinated the action from neighbouring Serbia using encrypted mobile phones and other sophisticated spy equipment&period; They were allowed to return to Russia despite Serbian officials&&num;8217&semi; acknowledgement of their alleged activities&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Shishmakov was deputy Russian military attache in Poland before being expelled for espionage in 2014&comma;&&num;8221&semi; Mr Katnic said&period; In 2014 there were several tit-for-tat expulsions involving Russia and Poland but the people expelled were never named&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Katnic said that Shishmakov travelled to Serbia on a passport with another name&comma; Eduard Shirokov&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;&&num;8220&semi;So&comma; the passport was given to him by certain Russian state bodies under another name&comma; and he is a member of the Russian military structures&comma;&&num;8221&semi; Mr Katnic said&period; &&num;8220&semi;It is clear that the passport on another name could not have been issued&comma; as well as everything else&&num;8230&semi; without the involvement of certain &lpar;Russian state&rpar; structures&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>US President Donald Trump&&num;8217&semi;s stand on Nato&comma; which he has described as an &&num;8220&semi;obsolete&&num;8221&semi; organisation&comma;
