		</div><p>Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked Democrats&#8217; action to increase the Covid stimulus cheque to $2,000 on Tuesday.</p>
<p>McConnell objected a motion by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to approve by unanimous consent a bill that passed the House on Monday.</p>
<h3>Democrats Weigh In</h3>
<p>Bernie Sanders, former presidential candidate, filed a motion to vote on the stimulus cheques right after overriding President Trump&#8217;s defense policy veto.</p>
<p>“The House passed, to their credit, a simple straightforward bill,” Sanders said in a brief interview Tuesday. “Let’s not muddy the waters. Are you for $2000 or not? Let’s not talk about so-called voter fraud or abortion or anything else.”</p>
<p>McDonnell blocked the motion by Sanders.</p>
<p>The disarray in the republican party provides an opportunity for the democrats to rally behind president-elect Joe Biden&#8217;s agenda.</p>
<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a tweet: “The House and the President are in agreement: we must deliver $2,000 cheques to American families struggling this Holiday Season.”</p>

<p>McConnell said the senate will consider the higher stimulus cheques in conjunction with two other Trump complaints unrelated to the Covid relief bill: the investigation into election voter fraud and reworking a law that shields technology companies from liability for user consent.</p>

<p><;h3<Republicans Split</h3>
<p>It should be noted that the increase in the stimulus package would cost $464bn, which is causing many concerned republicans to discuss about the ever-growing debt.</p>
<p>The president’s last-minute push for bigger cheques leaves Republicans deeply split between those who align with Mr Trump’s populist instincts and those who adhere to what had been more traditional conservative views against government spending.</p>
<p>Congress had settled on smaller 600 dollar payments in a compromise over the major, year-end relief bill Mr Trump reluctantly signed into law.</p>
