Kate Middleton emerged laughing and smiling after pouring champagne over a lifeboat as she and Prince William made their first official engagement since announcing their wedding.

The 29-year-old charmed the crowd as the happy couple appeared at Trearddur Bay in Anglesey, North Wales, to attend a service of dedication for a new RNLI lifeboat.

Miss Middleton arrived at the blustery scene dressed in a three-quarter length beige coat, suede boots, her hair tied back crowned with a feather fascinator.

After meeting dignitaries and listening to her fiance make a speech applauding the work of RNLI rescue crews, Miss Middleton poured a bottle of bubbly over the Hereford Endeavour.

Well-wishers cheered and applauded as the former shop worker spent time pressing the flesh and chatting with them.

Relaxed and amiable, Miss Middleton looked at ease during her official debut as she got a real taste of what life and her future royal role have in store for her.

Mingling with dignitaries and accepting gifts and cards from the assembled Union flag-waving crowd, she showed a lightness of touch and winning approachability. She even sang the Welsh national anthem faultlessly.

Jean and Keith Critchley took their three-year-old grandson, Samuel, to the royal walkabout.

Mrs Critchley, 63, from Warrington, Cheshire, said: “They are a lovely couple. He is a great lad and she is a beautiful girl.”

Mary Shaw, 71, from Trearddur Bay, agreed. “They are a lovely couple,” she said, as music from the Menai Bridge Brass Band and the Holyhead Male Voice Choir helped the crowd get into celebratory spirit.
