Parts of the country are braced for fresh snow showers as Britons prepared to return to work this week following the New Year break.

Forecasters warned areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland could expect a dusting of snow this evening, bringing icy road conditions.

The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for Strathclyde and overnight for south-west Scotland, Lothian and Borders and Northern Ireland.

Rain was expected to sweep across much of England into the early hours bringing milder conditions, but dull, cloudy skies and drizzle into Tuesday.

People hoping to catch a glimpse of a solar eclipse were likely to be left disappointed by the predicted cloudy conditions.

Aisling Creevey, of MeteoGroup, the Press Association’s weather division, said although temperatures would rise, the outlook for the first week of the year was unsettled with more wind and rain to come.

She said: “There is a cold front catching up on a warm front. There will be some snow over higher ground and quite a bit of rain and sleet.

“We are expecting 5-8cm across parts of Dumfries and Galloway and South Lanarkshire, turning increasingly into rain as the night progresses.

“The front will move south and east overnight reaching parts of England including Wales, the South Midlands and East Anglia where it will be cloudy with a few spots of rain and drizzle.

“There will be clear spells tonight over North Wales, Lincolnshire, Lancashire and Merseyside.”
