<p>A suicide bomber has killed at least 40 people and wounded many others in an attack on a food distribution centre in the north-west of Pakistan.</p>
<p>Islamist militants battling the state have attacked buildings handing out humanitarian aid in Pakistan before, presumably because they are symbols of the government and Western influence.</p>
<p>The bomber blew himself up at a security post close to the relief centre in the town of Khar in the Bajur region close to the Afghan border, said local administrator Sohail Khan.</p>
<p>He said the distribution centre was used by the World Food Programme and other agencies to distribute food to conflicted-affected people in the region.</p>
<p>The 40 victims were believed to be waiting for food, he said.</p>
<p>Pakistan has been rocked by more than 200 suicide bombings over the last three years, especially in the north-west.</p>
