<p>A design and technology teacher was sacked after taking two teenage pupils sledging within school grounds after a snowfall.</p>
<p>Richard Tremelling had not bargained for the fuss he would cause when he set out for what proved to be 10 minutes of impromptu sledging.</p>
<p>After it snowed overnight in February 2009 he took what he regarded as a &#8220;classic design&#8221; sledge into school to show pupils.</p>
<p>When two boys on the GCSE course asked to try it out at the end of the lesson he took them sledging on the snow-covered grounds of Cefn Hengoed Community School, Swansea.</p>
<p>While the sledging itself was uneventful, the outcome for the teacher was suspension pending an inquiry.</p>
<p>Mr Tremelling was accused of failing to consult the head teacher, or writing to the school governors, before setting off. And while he maintained he risk-assessed the activity before it began, he was told he should have done it in writing.</p>
<p>Within 11 months he was dismissed from duty for allegedly failing to follow the school&#8217;s health and safety policy.</p>
<p>In all he is accused of nine separate breaches, amounting to an alleged failure in his duty of care to pupils.</p>
<p>Appearing before a General Teaching Council professional conduct committee in Cardiff, he insisted the brief sledging episode was simply a logical extension of a lesson.</p>
<p>Mr Tremelling insisted that his own risk assessment was sufficient and that a written assessment was unnecessary.</p>
