<p>Thousands of families will have to pay an extra £160 or more for overseas holidays after travel giant Thomas Cook announced fuel surcharges on flights.</p>
<p>The surcharges range from £7.50 per person up to £40 for long-haul flights.</p>
<p>This means that a family of four travelling to Florida will have to pay an extra £160.</p>
<p>The surcharges apply to all bookings made from now on Thomas Cook Airlines&#8217; flight-only and package tours leaving the UK.</p>
<p>Brands affected are Thomas Cook, Airtours, Sunset, Manos and Club 18-30.</p>
<p>Thomas Cook blamed the increase on the rising price of oil and the subsequent increases in the cost of jet fuel, which have gone up by more than 40% in the last year.</p>
<p>Ian Ailles, Thomas Cook UK and Ireland mainstream chief executive, said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve worked hard to keep the impact of the rising fuel costs on our holidaymakers to a minimum but the fuel levy is an unavoidable result of the rising price of oil.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last week, Willie Walsh, the chief executive of the British Airways-Iberia merged company International Airlines Group, warned of possible fuel surcharges across the industry.</p>
