<p>Thousands of people could have to pay up to six years of water bills following an audit of customers by the UK&#8217;s biggest water company.</p>
<p>Thames Water warned that up to 15,000 of its customers could receive a &#8220;nasty shock&#8221; following an investigation into how many people have never received water bills.</p>
<p>Hundreds of Thames staff have checked on 1.7 million addresses across London and the Thames Valley, while urging people to come forward if they had not been receiving bills.</p>
<p>An amnesty ends on March 3, giving thousands of people just over a week to avoid paying &#8220;hefty&#8221; back-charges.</p>
<p>Thames said many older properties had been divided up over the years and in some cases no-one has informed the company of the change, meaning that separate bills have not been set up.</p>
<p>Mike Tempest, the company&#8217;s customer services director, said: &#8220;People confirmed as unbilled customers who do not take advantage of our amnesty could be in for a nasty shock &#8211; six years of water bills in one go.&#8221;</p>
<p>The average Thames Water bill is currently £303 a year.</p>
