<p>Airmen have allegedly crashed a £1.5 million Warthog troop carrier heading for the Afghan frontline while on a joyride, it has emerged.</p>
<p>They are thought to have caused nearly £40,000 damage to the brand new vehicle while careering around the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus.</p>
<p>A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said: &#8220;The damaged vehicle has been fully repaired and this incident, which is now under investigation, has not caused any delay to its deployment to Afghanistan. It would be inappropriate to comment further while the investigation takes place.&#8221;</p>
<p>Soldiers or &#8220;Tankies&#8221; from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment are in Afghanistan and have traded in their old Viking vehicles for the Warthog, which is better able to cope with roadside bombs.</p>
<p>RAF Akrotiri is a refuelling stopover for troops and kit going to and from Afghanistan. Soldiers spend time there after tours to relax before going home.</p>
<p>It is understood that station commander Group Captain John Bessell will be spoken to as part of the inquiry, to see if he can assist with any information.</p>
